Have you created a budget for yourself? Do you know how much you will need to have put away to be able to retire? Forget about all the travel and the fun stuff we tell ourselves we’re going to do when we retire. Let’s look at just eating : Let’s assume you and your spouse want to retire at 65, and expect to live for 20 years. Let’s say the two of you want to eat three times a day, and you want to do so all 365 days of the year. Let’s calculate based on a mere $7 per meal. Two people x 20 years x 365 days x three meals x $7 dollars = $306,600 You would need to have more than $300,000 in the bank … just to be able to eat! This assumes you don’t live longer than 20 years. This financial scenario allows no money for gas, utilities, insurance, golf, holiday presents for the grandkids, clothes, or medicines just food! And no eating out … that would be too expensive! How much is in your bank account right now? Is it greater than, or less than $306,600? If your number is far away from this estimate, we’ve got some work to do. The good news is, you can do it! It will take determination and focus. We will decide now to earn more, spend less, and invest more. We will get you to retirement with the wealth you need.
